Aftercare & Assessing Results
FOR AHA SKIN PEELS INCLUDING GLYCOLIC ACID, LACTIC ACID AND COMBINATION PEELS
-
Skin may feel smoother and brighter. Some see results immediately, others after up to 6 weeks. Always hydrate well and use SPF.
-
No. Used correctly, there should be no visible peeling or soreness. Mild tingling is normal, but if burning is severe, neutralise immediately and stop use.
-
No. When used as directed, these peels should not cause sheets of skin peeling. Instead, they work by increasing natural cell turnover, so results are gradual and controlled. You may notice mild flaking or dryness, but heavy peeling is a sign of overuse.
-
The term “skin peel” can be a little misleading. With cosmetic-strength glycolic and lactic acid peels, your skin won’t usually peel or flake in visible sheets. Instead, these peels work at a cellular level by loosening the bonds (called desmosomes) that hold dead skin cells together in the outer layer of the skin (the stratum corneum).
This process speeds up cell turnover — meaning old cells are shed more efficiently and replaced by fresh ones. The result is smoother, brighter, and more even-looking skin, without the harsh downtime associated with stronger professional peels.
So while you may occasionally notice mild dryness or tiny flakes, the true benefit of these peels comes from the microscopic exfoliation happening beneath the surface, not from dramatic visible peeling.
In short: the name “skin peel” refers to the chemical exfoliation process, not to the skin physically peeling off in sheets.

YES! Always apply sunscreen daily when using peels. Use SPF 30+ in the UK and SPF 50+ abroad in hot or sunny climates. Reapply throughout the day to protect your skin while it is more sensitive.
-
Some people see improvements straight away (especially at 20% strength and above), while others may need up to 6 weeks of consistent use. Results depend on your skin type, age, and the concern you are targeting. Remember — long-term, steady use gives the best outcome.

Peels can cause temporary dryness as dead cells are removed. Following up with a hydrating moisturiser helps restore balance, soothe the skin, and support recovery. Hydration also enhances the visible results of your treatment.
-
Yes, but ideally wait a few hours to let your skin settle. Choose gentle, non-comedogenic products and always cleanse thoroughly at the end of the day.
-
Direct sun exposure and tanning (for at least 7 days)
Sunbeds
Harsh exfoliants or scrubs for several days
Strong actives like retinoids until your skin has settled
Picking or scratching the skin — this may cause scarring or pigmentation
-
After about 3–5 days, once your skin has settled. Slowly reintroduce stronger actives like retinoids, exfoliating toners, or vitamin C — but only when your skin feels calm.
-
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within.
Get good rest to support natural skin recovery.
Protect your skin from environmental stressors (e.g. avoid smoke and pollution where possible).
