Sun Sensitivity & SPF
FOR AHA SKIN PEELS INCLUDING GLYCOLIC ACID, LACTIC ACID AND COMBINATION PEELS
-
Yes. AHAs increase sun sensitivity and the risk of sunburn. Apply SPF 15 or higher daily (ideally SPF 30+) while using peels and for at least six weeks afterwards. Avoid sunbeds and high sun exposure.
-
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) such as glycolic and lactic acid increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and raise the risk of sunburn. Using sunscreen daily helps protect your skin during and after peel treatments, reduces irritation, and prevents long-term sun damage such as hyperpigmentation and premature ageing. SPF is essential for at least 6 weeks after you stop using peels.
-
In the UK, we recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day while undergoing peel treatments. If your skin is very fair or prone to pigmentation, SPF 50 is advised. Always reapply every 2–3 hours if spending time outdoors.
-
If you’re visiting countries with hotter or sunnier climates, your skin will need stronger protection. Use SPF 50+ with high UVA and UVB coverage. Apply generously and reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Wearing hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sun hours will give extra protection.
-
SPF is non-negotiable when using peels. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapply throughout the day, and always use SPF 30+ in the UK (SPF 50+ if abroad in a hot or sunny climate). This helps prevent burns, dark spots, and premature ageing while your skin is more sensitive.
